Abstract
The study aimed to describe the environment-based students' motivation to learn Arabic in Islamic boarding schools in West Sumatra. The motivation was seen from its intrinsic and extrinsic aspects. This research employed a qualitive approach with data collection techniques carried out by observations, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out by triangulation of observational data, document analysis, documentation, and descriptive statistic. The findings indicated that Islamic boarding schools in West Sumatra employed environment-based Arabic learning, and it was evident that this approach improved students' speaking skills and generated their motivation. Intrinsic motivation encouraged students to speak Arabic, which was indicated by the desire to discuss Arabic language materials and was categorized as "very well". "Students' learning desire" was also raised on the aspect of "seriousness of doing learning tasks" with a "very well" category, and the aspect of "students' desire to progress" showed a "good" category. In short, the environmental approach sheds light on learning Arabic as it improves students' engagement in Arabic speaking.
