Abstract

The challenge of State Islamic University (PTKIN) to be an international standard university is getting harder in this global era. One of indicators of an international university is the number of international students. The presence of international students in higher education requires the students’ ability to adapt to the new environment. This study tires to uncover the problems and challenges of culture shock experienced by Thai students in the Islamic education department of UIN Walisongo. This study used a phenomenological approach by conducting interviews and observations to eight Thai students. The findings of this study are firstly, Thai students at UIN Walisongo experience socio-cultural barriers, namely 1) barriers to differences in air temperature and food preferences, 2) Indonesian and Javanese communication, 3) cultural value gaps, 4) learning and institutional model barriers, 5) cultural adaptation competence. Secondly the adaptation strategies to overcome these obstacles are 1) improving interpersonal communication skills, 2) living with fellow Thai students, 3) engaging student organizations, 4) disclosing to the social environment.
