Abstract

Every literary work contains meaning. A writer can convey ideas or messages through words or diction. The meaning of the writing can represent the author's feelings conveyed through literary works. The literary work referred to in this study is an anthology of short stories. The purpose of this study was to identify and categorize words with referential meaning and non-referential meaning words in a short story entitled "Album Memories". This short story is based on an anthology of short stories entitled "18 Uplifting Stories". This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique in this study was reading and taking notes. The researcher read carefully the short story entitled "Album Memories". After obtaining the results, conclusions can be drawn. In accordance with the theory used, the researcher found 33 meanings in the short story Album Kenangan, 24 words meaning referential and 9 words meaning non-referential. As a study of meaning, it is hoped that the results of this study can be a complement to previous research. Although the theory used is the same, there are very few studies that use a short story as an object.
