Abstract

In Indonesia, religious moderation is one of the Indonesian government's policies, issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 2019. Meanwhile, the Netherlands is one of the countries in Europe known for having a climate of high tolerance for its academic and academic culture. Therefore, a comparative study in the form of a cross-experiential case of the strategy of mainstreaming religious moderation values in two tertiary institutions with different regions, cultures, and religions is significant to see the model of mainstreaming religious moderation values . In the context of the position of faith in national life, religion in Indonesia is still part of its national values , and the Netherlands tends to be a secular country. This research uses a qualitative approach because it aims to build a theory inductively from data abstractions collected in the field of comparative studies at UIN Maulanna Malik Ibrahim Malang, Indonesia, and Radboud University in the form of cross-experiential research of the strategy of mainstreaming religious moderation values in two tertiary institutions with different regions and cultures and religions. This research proposes three main findings: (1) UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang sees religious moderation as a follow-up and implementation of government policies, particularly the Ministry of Religion. For Radboud University, religious moderation is a necessity for the development of campus institutions, and moderation values are implemented not only in the aspect of religion but it is also in other aspects, such as environment and culture; (2) Mainstreaming strategies and best practices at both universities involve and utilize the infrastructure and superstructure owned by each university, such as university policies related to norms or codes of conduct that contain values of religious moderation; and (3) UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang faces challenges, in general, arising from different understandings from lecturers about the concept of religious moderation and its internalization and implementation in the tri dharma of higher education, especially in the learning process. Meanwhile, at Radboud University, moderation in religion and other aspects is no longer an issue and is acceptable. However, they have an external challenge that arises from fundamentalist groups against the non-religiousness that has begun to appear in the Netherlands.
