Abstract

The regulation of students' emotions can be effectively implemented to foster positive social skills, including empathy, tolerance, compassion, and the prevention of recurring aggressive behavior within Indonesian schools, a phenomenon commonly known as bullying. The pivotal role of parents in nurturing emotional regulation emerges during the initial 16 years of a child's life. The quality of the parent-child relationship, shaped through parenting practices, directly influences the development of self-concept and, consequently, impacts emotional regulation. This study aims to examine how mindful parenting influences students' emotional regulation, with self-concept serving as a mediating variable. The research methodology employed a cross-sectional approach, involving a total of 488 students aged 13-16, selected through cluster random sampling. Utilizing the Mindful Parenting Questionnaire (McCafrey, 2017), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross, 2003), and the Self-Concept Questionnaire (Robson, 1989), the study conducted descriptive data analysis using SPSS version 26 and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that mindful parenting directly influences students' emotional regulation by 52% and has a 24% direct impact on their self-concept. However, the study did not reveal a direct influence of self-concept on the emotional regulation of students aged 13-16. In other words, students' self-concept did not function as a mediating variable in the relationship between mindful parenting and emotional regulation. This aligns with previous theories emphasizing the decisive role of the family, particularly parents, in shaping the emotional regulation development of adolescents during the crucial first 16 years of life.
