Abstract

This study aims to explore the social capital (reciprocity, trust, and cooperation) that is built through students' religious interactions in the disruptive era, their religious interactions that generate social capital and norms, foster or prevent religious moderation and the religious environment (masjid, ma’had, school, etc) that is conducive to encouraging a gradual shift towards religious extremism and moderation. This research is qualitative in nature but supported by quantitative data that conducted in 7 universities in Malang and Surabaya. The universities assumed as locus of religious interaction of the students. The result of this research stated that the students’ religious interaction categorized into two spheres: online and offline areas. Students tend to acquire a substantial portion of their religious understanding through online channels, surpassing both offline, and hybrid modes. There are specific religious ustadz that was chosen in their religious online interaction and more of them are believed as moderate religious figures. This research also found there are three channels of the public religious interactions among students those are: familial, campus-related, and extracurricular engagements within their residential communities. Regarding the social capital, bonding and bridging social capital are cultivated through students' religious interactions, while linking social capital appears to be almost non-existent. This research also stated that the values of religious moderation are mostly obtained from two important element: family and online religious discourse. The result also stated that the more famous speaker (Ustadz) will bring biggest possibility in joining religious gathering in university mosques. Students also believed that religious environment is strongly played a significant role in determining their religiosity. The result of this research can be an introductory recommendation to the government as an effort to internalize religious moderation in the world of education.
