Abstract
The character of responsibility in students is an essential character to be developed in learning. Teachers have a strategic role to develop these characters. This study aims to describe and analyze the activities of teachers and students in the classroom in the development of the character of responsibility. This research uses qualitative methods with the main instruments in the form of observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The subjects in the study were teachers and students in two junior high schools. There are as many as seven teachers who provide information about the learning process in the classroom. Seven students provided information about their expectations of character development and there were as many as two hundred and seven (207) students who measured the character level of responsibility through questionnaires. Data analysis techniques are performed through thematic analysis and descriptive analysis. The results of this study stated that the success of teacher activities in developing the character of student responsibility is due to an understanding of the condition of the character of their students. The results of this study imply that character development should begin with the identification of student needs in learning. The mixed-method approach can be used as an alternative in an effort to perfect research on the development of responsibility in students.
