Abstract

Sustainable environment policy requires community acceptance and support for its success. Place attachment plays a crucial role in those acts. Place attach-ment theory has been debated for more than five-decades and has been developed in the Indonesian context both for urban and architecture research studies. Several Indonesian researchers associated place attachment with the concept of Betah. As awordin Bahasa Indonesia, Betah is one of the common expressions of and the substitute for place attachment. However, no clear scientific article reviews using Betah as a substitute for place attachment. This paper is an overview of how the word Betah is discussed in place attachment research and what is the use of the word for future discussion on place-related research. Reviews on research papers and scientific writing reveal that place attachment lacked consentience and hindered the unification process of the theory thus creating confusion on its conception. This is because the use of the word Betah in Indonesian culture has the same purpose as place attachment, which is the positive bonding or attachment to a specific place. Also, Betah and place attachment are mostly similar in meaning, a prerequisite condition for its use, its constructs, and its factors. Therefore, using Betah can help simplify the complex quantitative research on place attachment. Betah can also expedite quali-tative research on place attachment. Overall, Betah has the potential to facilitate research on place attachment. Yet, there are limitations to using it, which are the context of the research area and language use.
