Abstract

This study aims at finding out the circumlocution strategies of EFL learners to handle their speaking problems at the English Letters department State Islamic University of “Maulana malik Ibrahim” Malang. It is carried out under descriptive qualitative case study. Two subjects were chosen purposely and the data got would be in the form of verbal and also nonverbal utterances of the subjects. The data were got from observation and in-depth interview. From the analysis, it might be concluded that the two EFL learners used circumlocution strategies to handle their speaking problems. There are some ways how they employed circumlocution strategies in their attempts to handle their speaking problems such as by describing the target objects and also using non-verbal expressions like hand movements and gestures. These strategies might help them solve speaking problems due to their limited mastery of vocabularies.
