Abstract
This study criticises the digital finding of interpreting digital verses in the frame of memes in the post-modern era. To reveal the symbols in memes, a qualitative study is employed to investigate Q.S al-Ah}za>b verse 33 regarding the prohibition of tabarruj (display of beauty) like the Jahiliya people (time of ignorance before Islam). This meme spreads massively on social media to resist against the fashion and beauty trends that are considered problematic. Moreover, trends such as beauty vloggers, make-up challenges, and styling challenges are trending topics on various social media platforms from year to year. These memes appear with various symbols illustrated by the author to strengthen the argument against an archer. For this reason, this study emphasises three mains research questions related to the visualisation of the meme, and the symbolisation of Jahiliya manifested in the production of memes. In general, this study will be operationalised using a semiotic approach initiated by Roland Barthes with three typologies of meaning, namely denotative, connotative, and myth. Strictly speaking, this study uses the keywords "tabarruj," "Muslim women," and "jahiliyyah" to track down memes which are the primary sources. Beyond that, this study also relies on secondary sources that correlate with tabarruj, Jahiliya, and al-Ah}za>b verse 33. The result of the study shows that tabarruj prohibition memes are visualised in three typologies; meme that shows the Qur’anic verse of al-Ah}za>b verse 33, meme providing the law on tabarruj, and meme with additional information related to tabarruj. In addition, the symbols that spread through this meme construct the netizens mindset and it creates myth.
