Abstract

Al-Munjid is an Arabic language dictionary that has sparked controversy within the Muslim community. The aim of this research is to describe the AlMunjid dictionary and its compilers, understand the method of writing the AlMunjid dictionary, and uncover the strengths and weaknesses of the AlMunjid dictionary. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. Data collection techniques involve observation and document studies. Data analysis techniques employ the Miles and Huberman model, comprising data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that Al-Munjid is a dictionary of the Arabic language compiled by a Catholic priest named Louis Ma'luf and Ferdinand Toutle. The method of writing the Al-Munjid dictionary is alphabetical. The strengths of the Al-Munjid dictionary include the inclusion of illustrations, while its weaknesses lie in the interpretation of certain words that lean towards a specific religion, not proportionally documented, which may give rise to sensitivity.
