Abstract

Subaltern is a group or individual who receives physical or mental violence. Among these
treatments is that they are unable to voice their opinions. So he was treated unfairly as if he was
not a human being. They are deprived of their human rights and they have no freedom of
expression. This study aims to find out what factors and impacts are caused by conflict on
subaltern communities in the novel "Karnak" by Najib Mahfudz. This research uses qualitative
descriptive method. The data sources used are primary and secondary data sources. This
research uses the method of reading and taking notes with analysis, namely classifying,
describing and concluding data in accordance with the problem formulation. The results of this
study are: first, the Muslim Brotherhood movement was a movement banned by the Egyptian
government at that time. The Muslim Brotherhood had a profound influence on the development
of the revolution. In addition, there was the defeat of the war between Egypt and Israel in 1960,
treason, mutual recrimination and suspicion and acts of revenge between the Muslim
Brotherhood and the revolutionaries. Secondly, society accepts many sufferings such as;
Tortured, arrested, unable to voice their opinions because they have differences of faith with the
government.
