Abstract

This article aims to analyze the tafsir book published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) in 2008, focusing on verses that tend to be exclusive to Islam and incite hatred towards followers of other religions. This analysis is then linked to the concept of religious moderation promoted by Kemenag in two books on religious moderation published in 2019 and 2021. Indicators of tolerance and anti-violence are used as benchmarks to assess the alignment between the tafsir book and Kemenag's books on religious moderation. The article highlights the exclusive interpretations in Kemenag's tafsir book as its main focus. In the Qur'an, there are verses that explain love and hatred towards non-Islamic religions. If Kemenag's tafsir maintains its exclusive interpretation, it clearly does not support the concept of religious moderation in Indonesia. The methods used in this research are descriptive-analytic and critical. The in-depth study results show that Kemenag's tafsir book contains many exclusive interpretations and explanations related to conspiracy theories. Thus, the tafsir book published by Kemenag in 2008 can be considered one of the obstacles to realizing religious moderation as described in Kemenag's books on religious moderation in 2019 and 2021.
