Abstract

With the development of more complex theories of language, syllabus is now seen as an important instrument used by the teachers to achieve the objective of teaching and learning. Inspite of its great importance, only in the last decade syllabus design and content has got more attention. This research develops the syllabus of Interpretive Listening course focusing on its materials, English Department, Faculty of Humanity, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang. Thus, the appropriate design for this is Research and Development (R&D). Here the researcher used Janice Yalden design which described that educational Research and Development is a process to develop and validate educational products.
The syllabus development stages which were adapted from Yalden’s (1983) model in developing a syllabus. In doing need survey there are 7 stages, those are (1) Need survey, (2) Description of purpose, (3) Selection/development of syllabus type, (4) Production of Proto Syllabus, (5) Production of a Pedagogical Syllabus, (6) Development and Implementation of Classroom Procedures, (7) Evaluation. The instrument used are questionaires which were shared to students, teachers and alumni. The English materials for English teacher at the second year students of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang which focuses on listening skill and supported with integrated skilss can meet the teacher’s need. The materials provide various activities which can gradually facilitate the teacher in guiding students to be more active and more enjoying in learning Listening Comprehension. The materials let the teacher constructs knowledge based on their prior knowledge, digging-up the teacher’s factual information, imitating from a model provided, responding to activities available in the materials, discovering new concepts, implementing a kind of group work in the teaching and learning process, and reflecting students’ achievement.
From the principles based on the needs analysis, the draft of the proposed materials was developed to respond to the needs of the students and the teachers materials by developing materials for teachers only. It was in the form of handy English materials that was developed based on teachers’ need. The draft of the materials contained chapters with daily life experiences. The materials was developed into 16 Units. Each unit were developed into tasks. Those 16 title on each units were: (1) UFO : A Story to Remember, (2) Family Activities, (3) Happy Birthday, (4) Healthy Life Style, (5) Snacks and Candy, (6) Airline Safety, (7) Driver’s Licence, (8) Smart Phones, (9) Tell Me About Yourself, (10) Marriage Preparation, (11) Weekly activities, (12) Calendar, (13) Japanese Public Bath, (14) Cooking Recipe, (15) Emergency Call, (16) Radio Advertising. These title were chosen under consideration that they were related to students’ interest and expected to enrich students’ experience to support their daily activities.
