Abstract

This study concerns with ethical and moral ideas in pesantren novels and Muslim young readers’ perspectives on the ethical and moral ideas presented on the selected pesantren novels, that is, Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s The Romance, A. Fuadi’s’ Negeri 5 Menara, and Abidah El Khalieqy’s Mataraisa. There are there points to find out in this study, that is, (1) how Muslim young readers’ reading experience relates to their interest in pesantren literature; (2) how Muslim young readers’ background and life experience relate to their responses to ethical and moral ideas of pesantren literature; and (3) the effects of ethical and moral ideas of pesantren literature to Muslim young readers’ perspectives on ethics and morals described in the novels and to their ethical and moral refinement. This study is a literary criticism. Concerning critical theory, this study will use ethical criticism that concerns both ethics and morals found in literary works. The result of analysis shows that all factors, that is, reading experience, interest, background, life experience, responses, and effects are related to each other. When looking at the relation between reading experience and interest in reading pesantren novels, other factors, that is, background and life experience are also identified as factors that influence the interest. Similarly, the readers’ responses are not only related to background and life experience but also reading experience, and the effects of the ethical and moral ideas to the readers are related to all factors. In short, all factors in facts cannot be separated. However, for the orderliness of the discussion the factors are discussed separately according to the closest relation, but in case relation is identified the discussion is directly related to the related factors.
