Abstract

The theme of love for the Ahlul Bait holds a significant place in Islamic intellectual tradition, as it reflects the depth of spiritual commitment and theological loyalty of the Muslim community to the Prophetic legacy. This article aims to re-examine the concept of mahabbah (affection) towards the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺfrom the perspective of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, by comparing it normatively, historically, and theologically with the Shiite viewpoint. The study employs a qualitative library research method with a content analysis approach to explore classical and contemporary texts. The findings indicate that mahabbah for the Ahlul Bait is not an exclusive doctrine of the Shiite school, but rather a universal Islamic teaching. Classical Sunni scholars such as Imam al-Shafi’i, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and al-Ghazali affirm that love for the Prophet’s family constitutes an integral part of faith. The differing definitions of Ahlul Bait across schools of thought reflect methodological diversity rather than essential theological conflict. This article contributes to correcting narrow perceptions and offers an inclusive narrative on the importance of loving the Ahlul Bait as a unifying principle among Muslims across various sectarian lines.
