Abstract

The destruction of nature has always been a serious problem for all living beings on earth. Natural resources are exploited by humans without any responsibility. Through literary works, especially novels, can be a bridge to provide awareness and concern for humans in preserving nature. This research aims to describe Greg Garrard's concept of ecocriticism in general and describe the narrative of natural destruction in the novel Nazif al-Hajr through Greg Garrard's concept of apocalypse. This research method is descriptive qualitative with Greg Garrard's ecocritical approach. The primary data source is an Arabic novel entitled Nazif al-Hajr by Ibrahim al-Kuni which takes the desert as the place where the people live there. Secondary data sources are scientific articles and related books. Data collection techniques are done by reading and recording techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed the existence of six main concepts of Greg Garrard's ecocriticism, namely pollution, wildness, apocalypse, dwellings, animals and the earth. Meanwhile, the narrative of natural destruction in the novel Nazif al-Hajr through Greg Garrard's concept of apocalypse is caused by natural factors such as drought and flooding, as well as human factors such as excessive exploitation of nature including oil dredging and underground resources to the shooting of deer cruelly.
