Abstract

A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims, and its building must certainly have a qibla direction. The qibla direction of a mosque must be determined as accurately as possible. However, in reality, there are still mosques that do not align properly. As experienced by the researcher in one mosque, the qibla direction during prayer depends on the imam. There are also mosques where the rows of worshippers are not symmetrical with the building. This article is arranged in order to conduct research that aims to answer the major question related to the method of determining the qibla direction in grand mosques in Banyuwangi Regency, and also the qibla direction in those mosques from the perspective of Islamic astronomy (falak) using the sine–cosine method. This is empirical legal research with a descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach. The study is located in several districts in Banyuwangi Regency, with data collection techniques in cluding interviews, observation, and documentation study. There are some mosques whose qibla determination in the past used esoteric knowledge, such as Al-Munawaroh Mosque, which used a knife fragment dropped into water. However, some mosques determined their qibla using scientific knowledge such as a compass, rubu’ calculations, and others. From the 12 mosques studied, 4 showed deviation based on the sine–cosine formula.
