Abstract

Online gambling has become a serious problem for the Indonesian people, with 9 million Indonesians gambling online, 80,000 of whom are children. Meanwhile, the turnover of online gambling in 2024 is estimated at Rp 900 trillion, which is 100 times greater than the Ministry of Religious Affairs' budget for 2025. A serious impact of online gambling is family disharmony, which often leads to divorce. Divorce rates in Malang due to online gambling have increased by more than 100% in the last 4 years. Not to mention the children who are unable to continue their education because their parents gamble away their money. This study describes the causes of the prevalence of online gambling in Malang and analyzes them using Jamāl al-Dīn Aṭiyah’s maqāṣid al-usrah. This research is classified as empirical (field research), which analyzes community behavior in accordance with legal provisions. The data required is not only juridical aspects, but also the phenomenon of
online gambling in Malang. This research is descriptive and qualitative in nature because it describes and studies the causes of online gambling in Malang and its impact on family harmony, which is then analyzed using maqāṣid al-usrah. Preliminary research results indicate that the prevalence of online gambling in Malang is due to the inappropriate use of technology. There are also indications of other factors, as it turns out that online gamblers are not only from low- to middle-income communities. These facts will be examined more intensively in the research, and the results will be analyzed using maqāṣid al-usrah
