Abstract
This study investigates how higher education institutions in Asia are working to create campuses where everyone feels they belong regardless of race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, age, or ability. By comparing these two different but globally connected societies, the research looks at the cultural, historical, and institutional forces that shape strategies for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). By comparing universities in Indonesia and Hong Kong, this study explores the sociocultural, historical, and institutional forces that underlie diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) strategies. Using perspectives from social justice and institutional change, the study asks: How do universities fight inequality? What policies and practices open doors for underrepresented students and staff? To answer these questions, the research draws on interviews with administrators, teachers, and students, as well as an analysis of policy documents.
