Abstract
This study explored how three Islamic international schools in Indonesia—Thursina, Al-Izzah, and Al-Azhar—manage the interaction of Islamic devotion, global education, and national identity through their cultural values and teaching methods.
Utilizing Bhabha’s (1994) concepts of hybridity and the third space, the results show that these schools operate as postcolonial contact zones where global knowledge systems, Islamic ethical principles, and civic narratives intersect but never completely blend. Rather, they create dependent and negotiated structures: Thursina fosters a spiritually focused cosmopolitanism with limited national ties; Al-Izzah enhances Islamic exclusivity while employing global curricula as a form of symbolic capital; and Al-Azhar advocates a more inclusive approach to “cosmopolitan nationalism,”integrating civic participation into religious-moral development.
