Abstract

This study examined the determinants of student well-being among pesantren adolescents by analyzing the role of school connectedness and the moderating effect of emotion regulation. Using a sequential mixed-method design, quantitative data were collected from 400 students across three Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia through validated scales measuring school connectedness, emotion regulation, and student well-being. Results of the statistical analysis indicated that school connectedness significantly predicted student well-being (β = 0.4339, p < .001), with higher levels of connectedness associated with greater psychological well-being. Emotion regulation also demonstrated a significant positive effect on student well-being (β = 0.1036, p = 0.023), suggesting that students who effectively manage emotional experiences report higher levels of well-being. Furthermore, moderation analysis revealed a significant interaction effect between school connectedness and emotion regulation (β = -0.0896, p = 0.027), indicating that the influence of school connectedness becomes less prominent among students with high emotion regulation skills. Qualitative findings from interviews and focus group discussions deepened the understanding of students’ perspectives regarding well-being in pesantren settings. Overall, the study highlights the importance of supportive school environments and emotional competencies in enhancing pesantren students’ well-being.
