Abstract

Folktales in various cultures often present universal themes, including gender representation. Bawang Merah Bawang Putih which is an Indonesian folktale and Cinderella which represents Western culture have similar themes related to gender representation. Seeing this fact, this study aims to explore how gender representation is displayed in these folktales, the similarities and differences in the representation of women's roles in both stories, which in turn will show how gender values are understood by society in each culture. To achieve the research objectives, this study will use text analysis methods, narrative comparison and contextual analysis using feminist study theory. This research is a literary study that is specifically a folklore study that uses folktales as the study material, namely two folktales that each represent Western culture and Indonesian culture. By conducting a comparative literature study of the two folktales, it is hoped that it can contribute to literary studies, especially folklore, and gender studies in order to see the relevance of folktales in shaping people's views on gender roles.
