Abstract

This study explores the linguistic landscapes (LL) of three Islamic universities in East Java: UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, UIN Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, and UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The research investigates the role of language in public signage and how it reflects institutional identity, language policy, and sociocultural dynamics. The study identifies the predominant use of Bahasa Indonesia in monolingual signs, with bilingual signs incorporating English and Arabic, and occasional multilingual signage combining these languages along with regional dialects. The analysis reveals that Bahasa Indonesia is the dominant language for communication and administration, while English signals modernity and international aspirations. Arabic, though less frequent, is utilized to reinforce the religious identity of these institutions. Multilingual signage, though limited, highlights the universities' efforts to balance national, religious, and global engagements. This study contributes to the growing body of research on linguistic landscapes in educational settings, underscoring the role of signage in shaping language practices and identity formation within multicultural and multi-lingual university environments.
