Abstract
Background: Hypertension, with systolic blood pressure >140 mmHg and diastolic >90 mmHg, is an asymptomatic condition known as the "silent killer" and is a leading cause of death in Indonesia. In 2018, the prevalence of hypertension in the Riau Islands Province reached 25.85%, with Karimun Regency ranking second. Objectif: This study aims to assess the relationship between knowledge and adherence to antihypertensive medication among patients at UPT Puskesmas Tanjung Batu, Karimun, in 2022. Methods: This observational study used a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from March to May 2022 from 90 respondents using a questionnaire. Sampling was done using the consecutive sampling method. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses with the Spearman rank test (significance <0.005). Results: Most respondents were female (71%), aged 46-55 years (43%), with elementary education (62%). About 56% had hypertension for less than 5 years, with doctors as the main information source (81%). Knowledge was moderate (49%), and adherence was low (83%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive relationship (p=0.001) between knowledge and adherence, with a moderate correlation (r=0.343). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between knowledge and adherence to antihypertensive medication among hypertensive patients.
