Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a thematic module on sustainable environment through a contextual approach, conducted in Lok Urai, a floating village in Sabah, Malaysia and a study of rainwater harvesting at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. The research aims to design and implement a learning module based on real practices of sanitation management in the community, particularly through the application of an Independent Sewerage Treatment System (ISTS) and a study of rainwater harvesting at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. The module is specifically intended for students at State Islamic Universities, integrating both theoretical understanding and contextualized environmental practices. Employing a research and development (R&D) method, the study involved needs analysis, design and validation. Data were collected through field observations, interviews with local stakeholders, and expert validation. Findings indicate that the sanitation issues in Lok Urai provide a relevant and authentic context for environmental education. The green rainwater harvesting technology at UIN Raden Intan Lampung is also able to increase students’ critical awareness of sustainability challenges and solutions through policy and cultural approaches. The developed module was validated as pedagogically sound for higher education settings. Furthermore, it contributes to strengthening contextual learning strategies by connecting academic knowledge with community-based environmental practices. This study highlights the importance of integrating local environmental realities into university curricula, fostering not only academic competence but also students’ social and ecological responsibility.
