Abstract

Teaching Indonesian language for foreign speakers (BIPA) not only aims to teach linguistic competence alone, but also equips students with cultural understanding to build intercultural competence. The integration of local content in BIPA teaching materials is one strategy for building intercultural competence in BIPA teaching. This local content includes literature, oral literature, social values, arts, culinary arts, and regional cultural practices in Indonesia. Intercultural competence, according to the model compiled by Byram et al. (2002), has five elements: attitude, knowledge, interpretation skills, discovery-interaction skills, and critical awareness of culture.
This study aims to examine how local content is integrated into BIPA teaching materials and to explore the responses of the learners to the use of local culture-based materials. This study was conducted in BIPA classes at several universities in East Java (UIN Malang, ITS, Unesa, STIE Malangkucecwara). The method used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through classroom observation, analysis of teaching materials, and questionnaires/in-depth interviews with foreign speakers participating in the BIPA program. The results show that the use of local content, such as folklore, traditional dances, regional specialties, and traditional ceremonies, has a positive impact on learning motivation and increasing intercultural competence. Learning motivation increases, because a sense of involvement in cultural activities arises
