Abstract

The basic concepts of semantics as a core area in linguistics focuses on the study of meaning in language. It examines how meaning is expressed through linguistic units such as words, phrases, and sentences, and how these meanings are systematically analyzed within the field of linguistics. The discussion begins with the nature and scope of semantics, emphasizing its role in understanding meaning as a structured component of language and its relationship with other linguistic domains, including syntax, morphology, and pragmatics. The chapter also outlines several types of meaning, namely conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic meaning, which together demonstrate that meaning extends beyond literal interpretation and is influenced by various associative and functional aspects. In addition, it presents key semantic relations such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, polysemy, and homonymy, highlighting how lexical items are interconnected within a linguistic system.
