Abstract
This reading comprehension module provides a targeted academic framework for non-English major university students to transition from literal word-for-word translation to critical, strategic reading. Grounded in Jeremy Harmer's communicative methodology and Beatrice Mikulecky's systematic reading power principles, the module equips learners with core data-retrieval and comprehension sub-skills. Students learn to identify precise topics by filtering out over-generalized or overly specific details, extract central arguments, and navigate layout typography using scanning strategies. Furthermore, it trains students to decode complex texts through rhetorical pattern recognition, specifically focusing on chronological timelines, cause-and-effect relationships, and comparative signal structures. By deploying authentic texts ranging from historical biographies to mass media, this module successfully accelerates reading speed, enhances professional vocabulary, and trains students to actively think in English.
