Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) contamination in commercial red palm oil raises concerns about food safety and public health. This study aims to identify the amount and characteristics of MPs in commercial red palm oil. Research methods include sampling of red palm oil from various commercial brands, separation of MPs using filtration and solution density methods, and analysis of the type, shape, and color of MPs with stereoscope and FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed that the most found MPs were polyethylene (PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinylchloride (PVC), with the dominant forms of fiber (35–87.5 %) and fragments (12.5–64.9 %), as well as black (33–83.33 %) and blue (12.2 %-66.66 %) as the most common colors. Commercial red palm oil has a significant level of MPs contamination with a wide variety of characteristics. This study has a significant impact in raising awareness of food safety and encouraging stricter regulations to minimize the risk of MPs in food.
