Abstract

This study analyzes the symbolism of the Arabic language in constructing the religious values of students at Ma’had al-Jāmi‘ah, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The research aims to reveal how Arabic terms function semantically and socially in shaping students’ identity and moral religiosity. Using a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnolinguistic approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving various Ma’had actors, including the Mudir, Murabbiyah, Musyrifah, and mahasantri. The findings indicate four main functional dimensions of Arabic terminology: (1) meaning and symbolism, which affirm Islamic identity and the scholarly tradition of pesantren; (2) psychological and moral aspects, which foster discipline, responsibility, and spiritual motivation; (3) social interaction, which strengthens communication grounded in Adab and Ukhuwah; and (4) religious atmosphere, which cultivates the Ma’had’s distinctive spiritual environment. In this context, Arabic functions not merely as a communicative medium but as a symbolic system reflecting the community’s values, beliefs, and religious orientation. Thus, the Arabic language serves as both a vehicle for internalizing Islamic values and an instrument for developing students’ moral and spiritual character in an Islamic boarding-based educational environment.
