Abstract

The rewang tradition is a practice of mutual cooperation that remains enduring in Javanese society and plays an important role in the social and economic life of households. This study aims to understand the meaning of rewang as a social and economic mechanism implemented by the community in Rejotangan District, Tulungagung. The research method used a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth interviews with nine informants who met the criteria for active participation in the rewang tradition. The results show that rewang is interpreted as a form of solidarity, cooperation, and moral obligation that strengthens relationships between residents through unwritten norms and the division of tasks based on social roles. Economically, rewang helps reduce the costs of celebrations through contributions of labor, goods, and equipment loans, although it incurs social expenses as part of a reciprocal pattern. Rewang functions as a long-term social investment that strengthens household economic resilience
