Abstract

Rigid textual understandings of religion often trigger socio-religious conflicts regarding technological advancements. ‘Aḥmad Al-Gumārī, a traditional 20th-century hadith scholar, conversely emerged to offer a progressive ijtihad based on a rational (bi al-ra'yi) paradigm. This study aims to examine the construction of Al-Gumārī's hierarchical methodology in bridging Quranic verses with modern scientific products. This qualitative library research analyzes the primary data of the book Muṭābaqah al-‘Ikhtirā’āt al-’Aṣriyyah through historical and philosophical approaches. In this book, Al-Gumārī successfully contextualizes Quranic signs into three tangible technological sectors: vehicles, communication devices, and electricity. His bi al-ra'yi commentary paradigm operates through five strict stages: Al-Quran as the primary source, munāsabāt (verse relations), reinforcement from predictive hadiths, references to scholarly opinions, and critical contextualization. This model serves as a solid, moderate alternative from a traditionalist perspective to reconcile divine revelation with contemporary science.
