Abstract

The radicalization of Muslim university students in Indonesia has become a pressing issue that has drawn the attention of numerous scholars, resulting in a wide range of literature addressing this topic. However, this abundance of studies has also created a separate problem, as the same issue is scattered across various publications, making it difficult for readers to obtain a comprehensive and coherent understanding. This article aims to contribute to resolving that problem. Specifically, it seeks to answer two main research questions: first, what recruitment patterns are employed by radical movements among Muslim university students that make these efforts relatively successful; and second, how these movements have actively spread across Indonesian higher education institutions. Using a qualitative library-based approach and content analysis, this study finds that the recruitment of radical movements occurs through diverse patterns—ranging from the use of official campus programs and psychological or sociological approaches to structured and unstructured, open and covert, as well as direct and indirect methods. Furthermore, these patterns appear to be effective, leading to the massive dissemination of radicalism across both secular and Islamic universities. The common assumption that radicalism only develops in secular universities with non-religious study programs needs to be reconsidered, as empirical evidence shows that the potential for radicalism can emerge in any type of university and in any field of study.
