Abstract
The study of heart diseases and spiritual therapy in the Islamic intellectual tradition is highly relevant for addressing mental health problems that are not only psychological but also spiritual in nature. Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya’s thought offers a tawhid-based psychological framework that places the qalb (heart) as the center of the regulation of human cognition, emotion, and behavior. This article aims to analyze the causal factors of heart diseases, their psychological aspects, and the concept of spiritual therapy in Ibn Qayyim’s thought. This study employed a qualitative method with a library research approach and content analysis techniques of Ibn Qayyim’s major works as well as related scholarly literature. The findings show that (1) heart diseases are caused by the dominance of worldly desires (hawa nafsu) and weak faith; (2) heart diseases affect cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects in an interconnected manner; and (3) spiritual therapy is carried out through tazkiyatun nafs, which includes takhalli, tahalli, and tajalli. This study contributes practically by formulating a mapping of heart-based psychological aspects and a staged model of spiritual therapy that can be adapted into counseling and spiritually based psychotherapy practices.
