Abstract
This study aimed to adapt and validate the Maternal Employment Guilt Scale (MEGS) within the Indonesian cultural context. Despite growing research on work–family conflict, empirical evidence on maternal guilt remains limited, particularly in non-Western societies. This study addresses this gap by examining the psychometric properties of MEGS among working mothers in Indonesia. A total of 557 working mothers participated in this study. The adaptation process followed international guidelines for cross-cultural instrument translation and validation. Data were analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to evaluate factorial validity, along with assessments of convergent validity and reliability. The results supported a unidimensional structure, with the model demonstrating acceptable to good fit (CFI = 0.913; TLI = 0.966; RMSEA = 0.054; SRMR = 0.059). All items showed significant factor loadings, ranging from 0.543 to 0.793. Convergent validity was confirmed (AVE = 0.691), and the scale demonstrated excellent reliability (ω = 0.933; α = 0.934). These findings indicate that the adapted MEGS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing maternal employment guilt among working mothers in Indonesia. This study contributes to the literature by providing evidence of the cross cultural applicability of maternal guilt as a psychological construct within a collectivistic context. The validated instrument offers practical utility for future research and interventions aimed at improving the psychological well being of working mothers. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies validating MEGS in a Southeast Asian context.
