Abstract
Hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes may be caused by increased oxidative stress of the body, especially the pancreas that can cause a decrease in the function of the pancreas to produce insulin. These conditions led to a decrease in the ability of cells to utilize glucose. Increased utilization of protein and excess fat through gluconeogenesis potentially damage the structure and function of the liver as the central control of metabolism. Bitter melon contains a lot of quarantine, while the garlic bulbs rich content of allicin and aliin. The use of a single dose of 4 ml juice that consist of 75% bitter melon and 25% garlic on observations 60 minutes after treatment can lower rat blood glucose levels quite well. Although Allicin, Aliin and quarantine have antioxidant activity as well, to produce a significant therapeutic effect permanently required sufficient treatment time to result in improved tissue structure and function.
This research aims are to study the effect of duration of combined alcohol extract of bitter melon and garlic on blood glucose levels, structure and function of the pancreas and liver of diabetic mice. This research was conducted using an experimental method, 4 treatment with 5 replication. Treatment of this study is a variation of daily dose of 0.075 mg dose alcohol extract of bitter melon fruit along with 19.75 mg of garlic extract alcohol for 15, 30 and 45 days in diabetic mice. The variables measured were blood glucose levels, liver transaminase enzyme levels and histological features of the pancreas and liver.
The results showed that the extract of bitter melon fruit and garlic (daily dose 0.075 mg; 19.5 mg) for 45 days has been able to lower blood glucose levels of diabetic mice is highly significant even up to normal levels with some improvement in liver function addressed by decreased levels of the enzyme near-normal transaminases. Therapy for 45 days also showed improvements in liver tissue structures close to normal pancreatic tissue and result in improved well. From these results it can be concluded that the extract of bitter melon and garlic that dose for 45 days was very good as antidiabetic herbs.
