Abstract

This study aims to explain the role of Arabic in the medical science through analytical studies on students of the Department of Medical Education, Faculty of medicine and Health Sciences of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Malang. The approach used to analyze data is qualitative analysis. This study has come to the conclusion that there are five important roles of Arabic Language. Firstly, it functions to increase the faith and devotion of medical students and also to explore the science of religion. In that sense, Arabic is a balance between Islamic religion and medical science. With that, when they treat patients, they not only prescribe medicine for their illness, but they’re also able to pray to God for their recovery. Secondly, Arabic is used as a medium for education and scientific studies, making it the language of medical science. In this case, students are able to expand their scientific treasures by getting various Arabic language libraries, both electronic and non electronic. Thirdly, Arabic as a medium to communicate, share knowledge, and also compete in the international arena. Fourthly, Arabic is a medium for the integration of Islam and medical science. In connection with this, when a student learns a medical science, he is able to integrate it with several verses of the Qur'an, Al-Hadits, and other Islamic sources. And the fifthly, Arabic has a role in making students the intellectual generation of medicine that is ulama', in the sense as the next generation of medical experts who have spiritual depth, noble character, extensive knowledge, and mature professions.
