Abstract
This Writing analysed shalawat reading tradition and mada’ih in the society, especially in Malang East Java. Malang society did shalawat reading tradition and madaih in various events, begun from life cycle ceremonies like wedding party, living a new house, tingkeban, brokohan or babaran, and khitanan and the other ceremonies such as welcoming honourable quests, welcoming bride and bridegroom, leaving for Hajj, and moving to a new house. In Malang, this tradition wa more passive and consumptive, repeated and dhikran kathiran. Shalawat reading and mada’ih were used as religious rituals that were stronger than literary tradition.
