Abstract
This study aims to describe the developments of human thought, to reveal the causes of the development of human thought, and to understand the impacts of the development of human thought on individual and family in the Atheist novel by Achdiat Karta Mihardja based on Auguste Comte's theory of evolution. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The main data source is the Atheist novel by Achdiat Karta Mihardja published by Balai Pustaka in 2009. The techniques of data collection are reading and taking a note. The techniques of data validation are increased persistence, triangulation, and peer and expert discussion. While the data analysis techniques use 3 steps in the Miles and Huberman model, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study are: (1) the developments of human thought consists of three stages, namely theological stage, metaphysical stage, and positive stage; (2) the causes of the development of human thought, namely factors originating from within the individual, such as age, increasing insight or knowledge, inner conflict (love), rebellion, and life principles; and factors originating from outside the individual, such as customs or habits and the environment; and (3) the impacts of the development of human thought on individuals is to be brave to oppose both parents, to fade religious values, and to regret; and family, such as to hurt the hearts and souls of both parents and the emergence of care from family members.
