Abstract

Community Coffee is one of the agricultural products which has a global market value. Malang Regency has coffee products planted in the hillside of Semeru Mountain that has been exported to abroad. However, to date, this regency has yet to register even one single superior agricultural product that has a geographical feature. This article discusses the effort ofMalang Regency government (the Government) to give legal protection in the form of Geographical Indication (GI) registration for coffee farmers in the Semeru hillside to challenge ASEAN Economic Community free trade and how the attempt is observed from justice perspective. This is a juridical sociological study with a qualitative approach. The government in 2015 proposed GI registration budget for Robusta Coffee’s Semeru hillside to the regent and were not yet agreed by Regional House of Representative in Malang Regency. Creativity and local products surely need legal protection from the localgovernment. The legal protection from the local government is to give the justice of traditional society. To realizejustice, the government must give happiness and benefit to society through IG recognition in the global market.
