Abstract
Everyone is exposed to various types of microbes around them that are ready to attack all the time, but every time the body tries to defend itself. One of the body's efforts to defend itself from various microbes is to balance or regulate the immune system in the body. This can be done by using medicines made from natural ingredients (plants) that contain certain active compounds as an alternative to prevent several diseases. One of the plants that has considerable potential to be used as medicine is Kesambi (Scheichera oleosa). Kesambi leaf extract has many active compounds including flavonoids, phenols and tannins. Flavonoid compounds are known to have potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Flavonoid compounds such as flavonols, quercetin and cathechin have been shown to inhibit the production of TNFα and nitric oxide by lipopolysaccharides from activated macrophages. TNF-α suppression is thought to be through inhibition of NFκB activation. TNF-α inhibition occurs in the post transcription phase while inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase occurs in the transcription phase.
