Abstract

In regard to the proposed research question, the present study confirms that the teaching literature in three Islamic higher education institutions has indirectly accommodated the values of tasamuh and tawsauth which promote moderation and tolerance. The head of English literature department, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya who also teaches literary courses admits that she does not specifically select tasamuh and tawasuth-related topics for the students. However, she always leads and encourages students to be open-minded and respect others during her teaching practices. The curriculum designed by the department has not embedded the values of tasamuh and tawasuth yet. The literary courses offered in the English Literature department Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya concerns much on the genre of the literature such as romantic literature, modern literature, and pop literature. It is the lecturers themselves who pay attention to promote tasamuh and tawasuth values in the teaching of literature. This evidence affirms that literature is an authentic material to introduce tolerance and moderation but the practice remains dependent on the lecturer since the curriculum has not yet employed a specific course on literature that is rich in tasamuh and tawasuth values.
