Abstract

Developing an appropriate textbook is considered one way of solving the problems in teaching-learning process. Based on the preliminary research done in the field, it was shown that the materials of speaking skills used at Pondok Pesantren Mambaus Sholihin Blitar were not systematically designed. In addition, the students’ characteristics and needs were not taken into account in selecting the materials. In other words, an appropriate instructional design for this course was not sufficiently available.

It became plausibly prominent to conduct a research which was focused on developing an instructional design for this subskill. This research aimed at constructing an instructional design for speaking skills which was considered suitable with the students’ characteristics and their needs as well. The System Approach by Dick and Carey (1990) was used as the bases. This involved several well-sequenced important components, namely (1) identifying the instructional goals, (2) conducting an instructional analysis, (3) identifying the students’ entry behaviour and characteristics, (4) writing objective performance, (5) constructing criterion-reference tests, (6) developing an instructional strategy, (7) designing instructional materials, (8) constructing and conducting formative evaluation, and (9) revising the instructional materials.

To obtain the intended instructional design, a try out of the design to the teachers and students as well as several crosschecks by the experts were unavoidably important to revise the design. The first revision was done right after the contents were evaluated by the selected expert on this area while the second evaluation was geared toward checking the steps of constructing the design. The last step was to try out the design in the class activities to evaluate the effectiveness of the design.

Based on the above evaluations and revisions on the design, several significant points can be derived: (1) the design was systematically constructed based on Dick and Carey System Approach, (2) the design was considered appropriate to apply in class, (3) the design was suited to both the teachers’ and the students’ needs; this was reflected on the positive opinions expressed by the teachers and the students on the questionnaire as well as the result of the post test.
