Abstract

Introduction: Diclofenac sodium is a non-selective NSAID drug, which has a partition coefficient of 13.4, so that its penetration through the stratum corneum is less than optimal. For that we need a material that can help increase the penetration of medicinal ingredients into the skin, namely enhancers. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of adding menthol as an enhancer with levels of 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% on the characteristics of the preparation (including organoleptic, pH and viscosity of the preparation). Methods: The preparation test in this study was carried out to determine the organoleptic test, pH test using a pH meter and viscosity test using a Cup and Bob viscometer VT-04. Results: The addition of 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% menthol produced a semi-solid gel preparation that was white in color and had a specific smell of menthol, but had no effect on the pH of the preparation. The addition of 0.5% menthol had no effect on the viscosity of the preparation, but the addition of 0.75% and 1% menthol could reduce the viscosity of the preparation compared to the addition of 0% menthol and an increase of 0.75% menthol to 1% did not cause a change in the viscosity of the preparation. Conclusion: Formulas I, II, and III are acceptable in gel preparations, because all formulas have met the requirements for gel preparations.
