Abstract
study was designed to examine the effects of Ramadhan fasting on levels of adiponectin and its relationship with weight and as well as glucose homeostasis. A total of 25 healthy adult Muslims (aged 20-22 years) are willing to become subjects in this study. Anthropometric measurements and blood sampling was performed at 1 week before and during the 4th week of fasting. Anthropometric data are used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), while the blood samples used to test the levels of fasting blood glucose and levels of Adiponectin. The results showed a significant decrease in body weight (p value 0.008) and in Body Mass Index (p value 0.015) at the 4th week of Ramadan. Fasting blood glucose levels also decreased significantly with p value 0.031. Likewise, Adiponectin levels decreased significantly (p value 0.044) at 4th week compared to before fasting. It can be concluded that the Ramadan fasting in healthy adults have a positive effect to maintain glucose homeostasis.
