Abstract

This book entitles Introducing Literature is attempted to provide students with the sufficient practices of English language and literature related to their subject that is, English Letters and English Education. Briefly the aims may be elaborated as follows:
1. To provide a comprehensive course for intermediate students of English language and literature and English language education. This course contains introductory level of studying literature, especially English literature. Nonetheless, some literary works in this book are taken from the work of Indonesian literature. The purpose of presenting some works of Indonesian literature is to give comprehensive approach of reading literary work though our own language or our first language. However, some works are also presented in English as those works are taken from the English and American authors as well as an Indonesian writer who writes his/ her poems in English. Some teaching and learning materials presented in this book have been developed by adopting various resources related to the study of literature.
2. To train students in learning to appreciate literary work which has become a part of culture that is learnt through language since it is used as a media to communicate the author’s feeling and thoughts. This course also sets out to provide suitable material that can be used to drill the students’ skill in reading and understanding the work of literature.
3. To provide teachers or lecturers with well-coordinated and graded material that can help him or her to conduct the lesson with a good preparation.
Through this reference book or module, it is expected that both teacher and students can also develop the materials of this book. Therefore, the learning process does not stop as the semester finishes. For the student of English letters or education who wishes to conduct research in literary work through appreciating the work, more reviews of the related theories are welcome, or even highly recommended to use other reference books since this book only gives a introduction of literature. Hence, more relevant literary theories from other books or scientific journals are needed to be read and comprehended
