Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the educational environment from face-to-face teaching in the classroom to virtual learning from home. In this case, every teacher should make educational innovations so that the teaching and learning process is effective. This research started to identify Instagram as a special alternative teaching method used to learn Arabic, especially in the defensive reading skill during the COVID-19 pandemic, for students of the first public secondary school in Malang. This is because, in our time, Instagram has been one of the students’ favorite social media. This research uses a quantitative descriptive approach to describe students’ responses and motivations in teaching Instagram reading skills in the COVID-19 pandemic using questionnaires, observation, and interviews with eleventh- grade students in the Department of Natural Sciences 2 Their number is 38 students with percentage analysis. The results of this research indicate that students' response is defined by four criteria, including design, suitability, interest, and satisfaction. The latter has a 94% "attractive" rating, which means that Instagram is a positive way to teach reading. As for their motives, their motives are known according to 3 criteria: the desire for the educational process, the students' satisfaction, and self-confidence at 94%, according to the "attractive" rating, i.e., an Instagram advocate. Although the self-confidence indicator for some students is less positive.
