Abstract

This study explains the representation of family values in the film "Ali and Ratu-ratu Queens." This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection technique used is observation and literature study using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This film is interesting to study because it describes the kinship created between two family elements bound by blood and a family that is only created by a meeting that makes them so familiar. Roland Barthes interprets symbols using markers and signifiers so that denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings can be found. Representation is a picture of life through the media. The representation of the family in the film Ali and Ratu-Ratu Queens is reflected in several film scenes, namely through dialogue and visuals. Eight scenes were chosen because they best reflect the family values between Ali and Mia and the Queens of Queens. The results of this study indicate that the family has a character that extends not only between parents and children but also between other people who are not blood-related. The Queen's character can create happiness for Ali, who is left behind by his mother, by giving them the simple pleasure they have. Researchers can further develop the film Ali and the Queens of Queens in terms of directing style, characterization, mise en scene, and storytelling development (three-act structure).
