Abstract

This research is motivated by the application of the discussion method in Sociology learning to students' critical thinking skills at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The objectives of this research include (1) To find out whether the discussion method affects the critical thinking skills of IPS students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang (2) To find out the use of the discussion method is an alternative to fostering critical thinking skills in the sociology learning process of IPS students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The results showed that students in Sociology learning conducted at the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang used the discussion method, where this method became one of the most effective methods to use. There are several reasons that strengthen the effectiveness of using this method, including 1) the class becomes more lively and fun because students will compete to express their thoughts, 2) students become more active during the learning process, 3) the material being taught will be easier to remember because students are directly involved with the conversations that are being held.
